I rail at the thought, but I can’t deny that she’s exactly the kind of woman I need to emulate.

I glance at Henryk, forcing a smile onto my face. I can feel how tight my mouth is, though. How false my smile must look.

“That was an intense night,” I comment.

“We almost had that smug bastard,” he snarls. “If it weren’t for that jumped-up bitch in heels...”

“Why would she do that?” I’m doing my best to sound as disappointed as he is.

I glance out at the open road ahead of us.

Henryk has taken the long route to my apartment. But I still recognize the area, so I’m not overly concerned. It’ll probably take us another twenty minutes to get there.

Plenty of time to keep mining for usable info.

“Beats the fuck out of me,” he says. “But she’s been bouncing on Kazimierz’s cock, so that’s probably how she gets her way.”

I’m not expecting that revelation. My eyebrows shoot up. “She is not?”

“Not what?”

“Fucking Kazimierz?”

He laughs. “‘Course she is. Why do you think the underbosses stepped aside and let her throw her fucking weight around?”

“Jesus,” I breathe.

Does Lucio know?

More importantly: if he did, would he care?

“Have you met her?” I ask casually.

“Who—that stuck-up bitch?” he scoffs. “Nah, she doesn’t concern herself with the rank-and-file. With the trash.”

I sense the bitterness in his tone.

It’s the tone of a man who’s always been surrounded by more powerful men. He’s been talked down to his entire life.

That’ll be my way in.

“I don’t think you’re trash,” I say, leaning to my left a little.

“No?” he asks.

“No,” I emphasize. “If I did, I wouldn’t be in this car with you.”

A grin cracks through his otherwise moody façade. My face flushes.

I’m on the right track.

“I’ve been treated like trash my whole life, too,” I tell him. “But we’re the ones with all the power.”

He raises his eyebrows, looking intrigued. “Yeah? How do you figure that?”

“Everyone underestimates people like us,” I tell him. My own voice is infused with bitterness. Some of it fake. Some of it real. “They don’t consider us important, so we blend into the background. We hear things other people don’t.”

In his case, I’m really hoping that’s true.

“Yeah,” he mutters. “Yeah.”

“I’m sure you know a whole lot more than people think.”

“I fucking do.”

“Like that woman and Kazimierz,” I say, digging my heels into the point. “I’ll bet you knew about the two of them before anyone else did.”

“That’s ‘cause I’m fucking smart.” He thumps an angry hand on the steering wheel. The car swerves with the motion, and I remember that he’s still pretty drunk from the fights.

Can’t get him too riled up or else he’ll kill us both.

“Mhmm,” I agree. “Very smart. And that’s sexy.
